Subbed Haromoni@ 24 August 2008

So it’s time for another haromoni@ review. Except it isn’t. Well not exactly. I am waiting for the subbed episode that will hopefully come later in the week so for now this is just a work in progress. I’ll edit this when I’ve seen it subbed…maybe. Well if I don’t want to then I’ll edit out that last bit at least. Oh and I’ve already made a few changes following shikyoxyaiba’s reply. The subbed episode is now available.

The look this week…

So what does the show involve this time? Well it’s a hidden camera practical joke set up. The set up is that the members are told individually that they have won 400 million yen in the lottery. Their reactions are then recorded and they are rated by their response from 1 to 9 with 9 being the most angelic and 1 being the greediest. Just what would they do if they had that kind of money?

In the first clip Takahashi is told she has won. There then follows a few clips revealing how they had been tricked into picking 6 numbers each 2 months earlier. They had filmed a fake ‘luckiest girl’ show where they had to eat cream puffs with one being foul and do other games with an element of good and bad luck. The few brief clips they showed made it seem as much fun as Hello! Morning used to be. The fake show they didn’t air looks about 10 times better than the Haromoni@’s they do air. Typical. Anyway Lovely is then asked if there is anything she wants with the money to which she replies clothes. She also indicates she would share with the other members. When told that it’s company policy to give all the money to charity though she immediately agrees…

Anyway when the truth of the lotto trick is revealed…

Well at least she could smile. Takahashi who I’ve always loved anyway showed all her sweetness in my opinion. Her reaction to winning and her reaction to being told that the money has to go to charity were both beautiful in their own ways. Even though she actually showed no greed she is put on the board at number 5…

The next person up is Junjun who we are immediately told is at number 9. Why tell us in advance? If they let the clip play out first and maybe mixed the numbers up a bit it’d be more exciting. They could still have left the greediest 2 until last…

Junjun’s response to what she would do with the money is that she would buy her parents a present. When asked if she would like anything for herself she replies that she would like some clothes (a recurring theme!) She also immediately agrees to the giving of money to charity. Aww what an angel.

Who is 8th? Well it’s Eri who was sweet. One of the first things she says is ‘this is a joke’ so her idiot Kame persona is a bit unfair. She’s not that daft. She also says she will share the money with the other members and donate to charity. This before she is even told about the charity rule. When she is told it’s a trick I love the way she climbed into the small space. Eri likes her small spaces. She also suddenly wants the money far more when it’s revealed that there is no money…

Lucky number 7 was Kusumi. What was the chance of that? Ask her accountant. Anyway Koharu actually shows a lot of maturity saying that deciding what to do with the money is not something to suddenly decide on. Her reaction to being told it was a trick was really adorable. Her smile is never far away…

So up to number 6 and it’s Sigh Yummy…

Sayumi gives me the biggest laugh of the show. When she realises she has won 400 million she indicates she wants to get into a bath full of money. She also indicates that she’ll share with the other members and give some to charity. Again this is without being told about the ‘company rule’. This means the bottom half of the table is complete…

Onwards and upwards at number 4 it’s Linln…

Linlin it turns out has a burning desire to open a crepe store. So back to the studio and it’s going down well…

However there are only 3 people left to reveal the results for. Who’ll take top spot? A quick flick through the 3 who are left shows Reina looking very worried. Niigaki also looks a bit concerned underneath that smile. Mitsui meanwhile just looks cheerily resigned to whatever fate lies in store…

So who is at number three? It’s…

Mitsui wants to buy a house and raise a Syberian Husky. Strangely that’s something I really want to do too. Although I also want an Old English Sheepdog but that isn’t really relevant to anything. Anyway I think it’s a bit unfair but the host (baby gitface or whatever he’s called) thinks wanting a house and a dog is greedy. Is it? really? I’d disagree. Anyway Mitsui reacts well to being told it’s s trick. Cabbageman is getting his fair share of being called an idiot during this show. So back in the studio it’s Reina versus Niigaki…

When the next clip is started there’s a shriek of joy from Reina as it reveals her in 2nd place…

Reina wants 100% of the money or at least 150 million. When told of the donation rule she states she wants some of it. She is smiling when it’s revealed to be a trick but apparently she has been critical of this show elsewhere. Rumour has it she was less than happy. She’s supposed to have said how she immediately thought about her father and how he can stop working now. Does show how it’s a bit of a cruel trick. Anyway Reina comes in second. Can’t say I feel any less about her. She was just being honest. Back in the studio and two conflicting reactions…

Reina happy not to be number 1. Niigaki meanwhile thinking whatever the Japanese equivalent of ‘doh’ is. So it’s time to show the number 1 girl Niigaki…

Gaki wants a villa and a trip to Florida amongst other places. When asked about donating she indicates she’d like to keep 200 million. Just ahead of Reina’s 150 million then. Back in the studio…

At least she’s taking it well. She’s quite amusing talking of how people tell her that her level-headedness can disappear at times. To be fair none of the girls have reacted differently to how I would (or I suspect to how you would). All the girls reacted well to the revelation of the trick too. It was amusing (if a bit cruel) and the change of style for the show was a welcome one. I don’t think any of the members came out badly from it.

The preview for next week shows that it’s largely back to the usual routine with another Niigaki throwing clip, Lovely looking lovely and the Eri and Sayumi combination out and about again. However Eri and Sayumi are shown on a roller coaster and remembering how much Eri always hated them from the old Hello News segments it could be interesting to watch. If only there was a giant pink bunny there too. Oh and there’s also Reina hitting Kusumi outdoors. Always good to see some daylight and it’s a double dose next week…

On an unconnected note it was so much fun deleting all 80 or so pics and loading them up again just because WordPress had made a stupid change that meant none of the thumbnails led to a larger pic. They had introduced a new box under ‘settings’ and ‘media’ where you had to click on an option to make the thumbnails link to the actual picture. This had also affected my previous post about Junjun so I had to re-upload all those pics as well. In all it took me over an hour. What a strangely pointless change from WordPress. I mean why would you not want a thumbnail to link to the actual picture? The things we fans do for…umm…actually just why do I do this blog? Oh right…because it’s better to shout into a void than keep it all in. It must be cathartic.

  1. …I actually thought it was on a scale of how greedy they were with the “money” they’d won. ._. That’s why Niigaki wasn’t too happy to be at the top…

I don’t understand much Japanese, but in the beginning (when they started with Junjun) the lower ranked members would say things like, “I’ll give it to my mom and dad” or “I’ll donate to charity” or something along the lines…

  2. Ah that would make more sense. To be honest my first impression was that it was to see how angelic they were or whatever. But then I was reading some posts on a H!P forum about the episode and they were talking about reactions. You’re probably right though. Mind you I’m changing this post when a subbed version of the show becomes available anyway. 😀

Actually if it was greed I’d say well done Reina for not coming top. A few shows back the host (baby whatever his name is) was telling her off for equating everything to money. I really like Reina but I reckon that kind of thing is very her!

  3. I actually stumbled across your blog after looking around H!O. If you check out the Tanaka Reina thread, she (Reina) wrote a little message in some blog/diary thing where she says she wasn’t too happy with the episode/recording. The girls were honestly tricked into believing they’d won that much money, and Reina said the first thing she wanted to do was tell her dad that he can quit his job and just relax/travel. Must have been heartbreaking when Cabbage-man ran through with the “surprise” sign. 😦

Actually, I’m waiting for the subbed version too…I’d understand a little bit of the chat in the episode, but the all around idea, I’ve got. :/

  4. I guess Japanese tv is good at playing tricks. Remember the tv special where the 1st to 4th generations were taken to Hawaii and thought they were getting an all expenses paid 3 day shopping extravaganza? Only to then find that they’d be battling for food.

Reina’s reaction shows a good side to her. It probably also shows the difference between the money Jpop stars make compared to western counterparts. I mean any western singer in a group as successful as MM would probably have bought their parents a house and a ticket to a new life within about the first six months. Somehow I don’t think the majority of Japanese idols make anything like the kind of money to be able to do that. Which is probably why the lottery trick worked. Also why it was a bit cruel. Having said that I really hope the MM members get paid a decent enough salary! I kind of think they probably are doing okay from H!P.
