Morning Musume – 10 My Me

This may be very late but so is YesAsia’s post. I only got this album on Friday (sadly one day after my birthday. Would have been nice a day earlier but Ai-chan is always worth waiting for). Anyway what do I think of the album?

1. Moonlight night ~Tsukiyo no Ban da yo~ (Moonlight Night ~It’s a Moonlit Night!~) The song starts off with an unknown woman of around Mitsui’s age telling us in English that this is “electro convulsive therapy part one”. There then follows a song that’s a little bit dated. It sounds a bit techno 90’s style. So pretty much a typical H!P song. As for the song title, well who’d have thought that a moonlight night is a moonlit night?

2. Kimagure Princess (Fickle Princess). The sexy butts and breasts of the eight Momusus ladies and the 8 teats of Mitsui and her bushy tale combine to give us the best damn Momusu single in ages. Great song. Just let the rhythm take you over. Oi Oi!

3. Genki Pikappika! (Shining Energetically!) sounds like it could have been one of those unfathomably popular album tracks from their mostly boring 8-Beat album.

4. Namidacchi (Tears in a Cute Way) is a post-punk big two-fingers up to the establishment. Okay not really. It starts with a piano and then turns into the type of song that could be sung at the start or end of a Summer or Winter H!P concert by all of H!P. Which is a good thing. Even so four songs in and by this stage of the Platinum 9 Disc album we’d already had SONGS, Resonant Blue, Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou? and Take off is Now! So the last album is winning. But tracks 2 and 4 and the strange start to track 1 are at least keeping 10 My Me’s head above water.

5. Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai (Why Shouldn’t Women Stand Out?) I haven’t written anything about this single on my blog yet but it’s actually a much better song than we’ve often got from Momusu’s singles in recent times. Like Kimagure Princess it deserved to sell better than it did.

6. Ookii Hitomi (Wide Eyes). Okay it’s time to start splitting the members. This technique gave us the excellent Take Off is Now and delightfully alluring and completely dirty It’s You last time out so I have high hopes for more of the same this time around.

Oh. This sounds like Onna ni Sachi Are (All the Best to Dated Songs). It’s no Take Off is Now! that’s for sure. But wait…

7. Ano Hi ni Modoritai (I Want to Return to That Day). It’s Lovely and Niigaki. Okay maybe this time?

Bollocks. Where’s this album’s Songs? Where’s this album’s Take Off is Now!? This sounds like something Louise would have come out with as a filler on one of her solo albums back in the 90’s (that’s in no way a compliment). When I think of the possibility of an Ai-chan solo career this is like the debut single of my nightmares. Bland.

8. Nanchatte Renai (Fake Love) is another decent recent single. That makes three on this album which isn’t bad. I will hold my hands up and say that with time I’ve come to like the recent singles quite a bit. Although with the exception of Kimagure Princess (which I loved straight of the bat anyway) none of them quite have the repeat listening obsessive compulsive disorder charms of earlier Momusu singles.

9. Osaka Umainen (Osaka is Delicious) has the twin delights of Junjun and Linlin to recommend it. Unfortunately it also has a scabby dog singing along too. It’s a little known fact that Osaka is also a dog-food in Japan which explains Mitsui’s involvement in the song (this may not technically be true. In fact it may technically be an outright lie). Anyway this is another song that sounds like it was made to be the theme tune to some 80’s Japanese cartoon series (that’s not a compliment either). Shame.

10. Loving You Forever (Love You Long Time) is a bit of a ballad. As such it fails to sound as dated as some of the other songs just because ballads are timeless (in both good and bad ways).

11. Shouganai Yume Oibito (Helpless Dream Chaser) is Momusus’s last number one and curiously the worst single on this album. Still it’s not bad and is better than most of the album tracks.

12. Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou? (Chinese Ver.) (If It Doesn’t Rain, Will the Stars Not Love?) tries hard to be this album’s Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou? Well I guess if you happen to speak Chinese you may be skipping in glee at this and fair enough. If they ever do an English language song I’ll probably orgasm on the spot. It’s also nice that JunLin get to sing in their native language. It’s pretty obvious that the inclusion of this song on the album (instead of, say, putting it out as a b-side) is a commercial one. Not for Japanese commerciality obviously but with one eye on a big potential audience outside of Japan. This version starts off with a plaintive guitar bit and then the Casio keyboards I reckon Tsunku uses as the basis for EVERY SONG starts to come in. To be fair it sounds okay but the version of this song on the last album was beautiful. The music has been changed but not improved. That’s a shame because I don’t care what language this song is sung in it’s a great song. I’d have to say though that the best ever version of this song is the one the Whole of H!P did live (and which was subtitled by the late Hello! Fansubs). Just check it out..

Just bloody wonderful!

So all in all this album for me is the reverse of the last one. Whereas the last one had some poor singles and some great album tracks (along with a few duds) this album has some decent singles but very bland, run of the mill album tracks. The likes of Take Off is Now! and Songs last time out gave me some hope for more of the same. Instead it’s back to the 8. There’s even a song with the word “genki” in the title.

If you bought the limited edition version you at least get a dvd to treasure. What’s on it? Well you get solo versions of Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai in which Ai-chan looks frankly just stunning…

Niigaki looks…

…In a mirror (badoomtish).

Eri looks like she’s been copying Linlin’s hair…

Sigh Yummy looks as beautiful as ever…

Reina looks like a sexy cat that’s got confused and thinks it’s a TOTAL FOX!

Mitsui looks about as good as Mitsui normally looks…

Junjun looks damn kissable…

And Linlin also looks totally like someone I would have repeated sexual encounters with given half a chance…

You also get a live version of the same song…

What you can’t see in that picture is that Niigaki has been to the butchers to have her hair done and now looks like one of Hanson.

Finally you get a behind the scenes look at the photoshoot of the album cover and booklet. This includes Mitsui being surprised with a birthday cake. It was her 17th birthday (84 years old in human years).

Personally I think the dvd is a nice little extra. Especially considering how stunning so many of the members look in the solo version pv’s. I always prefer the LE versions anyway but this time around it’s made the purchase well worthwhile. It’s a pity the album itself didn’t.

  1. I must agree to disagree with you on this…

I find the album to be right up my alley.

Moonlight Night is funky and full of energy. <- Love it

I never really liked Kimagure Princess that much. But it's still a good song.

Genki Pikappika! Didn't really get to me right away. But after a couple of days of constantly listening to this album and only this has made it into one of my favorite songs.

Namidacchi is another good song. I agree with you here that it would very well fit as a Summer/Winter H!P concert sung by all of them.

Onna ga medatte naze ikenai. Well, thats simply my favorite song and can't seem to stop listening to it. (or watching it, too much stunningness to watch)

Ookii Hitomi has to be my favorite on this album actually.

And then theres Ano Hi ni Modoritai, another great song.

Nanchatte Renai I simply love, always have and always will.

Osaka umainen I won't talk about.

Loving you forever just catches my heart and makes me love it.

Shouganai Yume Oibito, well, it isn't my favorite song. But it's not like I don't listen to it.

And for the chinese… well. let's just say, uhm. What?!

Oh and yeah. the Mitsui surprise birthday cake is always (not) fun to watch. But the dog petting is always nice. MM really likes dogs huh?

  2. I agree with you about the singles but I really don’t find the album tracks as bland and run-of-the-mill as you do. I think the album is pretty solid in its entirety. Maybe not the best ever but certainly one I’ll listen to a lot.

And yeah, the DVD is a must-have IMO.
