And so there we have it. You have voted in your mill…thou…your hundred and 78’s and decided that Morning Musume’s Onna to Otoko no Lullaby Game is the best H!P single of 2010…even though it’s not even the best H!P single with the word “Onna” in it of 2010. >.> C-ute’s Dance de Bakoon! was quite clear in second place and then S/mileage’s Yumemiru Fifteen just sneaked into third place. Meanwhile at the bottom C-ute’s Campus Life and Lilpri’s Little♥Princess☆Pri! both failed to get a single vote. Overall Momusu still seem to have the biggest support with two of their three singles getting into the top four. Thanks to everyone that voted.
But what of my own personal top ten you may ask (but probably won’t)? Well here it is in reverse order starting at number ten.
10. Berryz Koubou – Maji Bomber
Berryz Koubou’s guitar-based single props up my top ten. I do like a good riff you know and with Buono restricted to just one single this year I’m glad Berryz took up a tiny bit of the slack.
9. S/mileage – Onaji Jikyuu de Hataraku Tomotachi no Bijin Mama
S/mileage do guitar-based pop better than any other H!P group and this song is no exception. How can you not be won over by it’s energy and cute high-pitched vocals? S/mileage ruled 2009 as an indie group and frankly they pretty much ruled 2010 even though their major label singles weren’t as good as their indie ones had been.
8. Morning Musume – Onna to Otoko no Lullaby Game
The second best H!P single with the word “onna” in it of the year comes in at number 8. It was the final Momusu single of Junjun, Linlin and Eri. After this things would never be the same again. Well at least they bowed out with a surprisingly catchy and well-polished single. A big improvement on the lacklustre Seishun Collection. Following this single Momusu were down to five again for the first time since their debut single all of 13 years ago. Only now they were made up of one fifth Lovely, one fifth yankii, one fifth cute, one fifth boring and one fifth ugly mentally retarded canine. I hope the ninth gen are bloody good.
7. C-ute – Aitai Lonely Christmas
It was a strange year for C-ute. Shock! was a bit too much of an Airi solo effort and their fifth album was dull. Then Campus Life was okay but nothing spectacular. It looked like being a hugely disappointing year for us C-ute fans. But then suddenly towards the end of the year C-ute came storming back. Dance de Bakoon! blazed a trail and then Chisato went absolutely ape-shit on crack and started taking over everywhere. C-ute were back! Then they gave us this equally line-distributed Christmas offering. A damn decent end to their year after a low-key start and one that makes me want to spend Christmas in a house with C-ute…like I didn’t want that already.^^Hey in my defence I’d like to say I’m sure I’d be able to cheer them up. Who doesn’t want lots of Christmas hugs? 😛
6. Buono – Our Songs
Buono only had one single released during 2010. I was (and still remain) concerned that the ending of the anime might mean the ending of the group. Especially after a best of collection was released. However a new single is to be released 2 February 2011 so maybe they still do have a future…unless this is a repeat of Biyuden’s demise (a single, a best of album then nothing for a year until a farewell single). Anyway whatever happens Buono did one new single in 2010 and as was to be expected it was a damn good one. All hail Buono (and their sexy keyboard playerEji who you can follow on Twitter here).
5. Mano Erina – Onegai Dakara…
Mano Erina had several good singles out this year but none caught my attention as much as her debut indie singles or as much as Sekai wa Summer Party did last year. Except for this song. This song caught my love with polite ease. >.> I’d still like her to get back to the piano though!
4. Morning Musume – Onna ga Medatte Naze
The best H!P single of the year with the word “onna” in it comes in at number 4. If you don’t like that you can tell it to MY FACE. Yes I know that makes no sense whatsoever. It’s a great single though. Why so little love for it? Moving on…
3. S/mileage – Otona ni Narutte Muzukashii!!!
Did I mention S/mileage being great at guitar-pop? The pv may have looked cheaper than a mother who shops at Iceland but unlike said mothers at least it and the song itself were full of charm. S/mileage do this kind of thing so well. If you have four girls aged 14 to 16 you should use them well (ooer). You should make full use of their energy (ooer), their innocence (ooer) and their cute high-pitched voices (ooer?). Then you should have them clean themselves up and go and record some really cute and catchy singles that make you feel as energetic and as young (temporarily) as they are. S/mileage are the perfect pop group! This single was a perfect peach of pop…or somesuch. Mmm…peaches.
2. Oha Girl Maple with S/mileage – My School March
How was this single so good? Take one of S/mileage, two other Oha Star presenters who also aren’t Kusumi Koharu (where’s her solo career Tsunku you lying git?) add in the other three members of S/mileage and a marching band and what have you got? The answer is “joy”! It’s a single that sounds so totally different to anything H!P ever does (with a great pv to match). With the cute special looking Erika and the cute S/mileage members it’s a winner. You can’t help but feel happy happy joy joy when listening to it. It’s that beautiful, innocent and enthusiastic happiness that only idols can produce. If you could mine it and send it round the world the whole planet would be wealthy and healthy. Great song, great collaboration, great feeling!
1. C-ute Dance de Bakoon!
There was only ever going to be one number 1 for me. As soon as C-ute exploded back into life with this brilliant slice of disco pop it was as sure of getting my number 1 position as Mitsui Aika would be of getting a lethal injection if I was her vet. C-ute + energy + equal line distribution = WIN! This song is the H!P single I’ve listened to the most this year. That in itself is all the proof for me that it’s the best single of the year. This is the kind of style that C-ute do best. It may in time even challenge Forever Love to be my favourite single of theirs. I can’t give any song a bigger compliment than that. C-ute are back. Now somebody take Chisato’s crack away from her before she starts taking over the whole of H!P, Youtube, iTunes and the world! 😛
